There is no better place for me to be than with wild horses at dawn. I was delighted to encounter a wild family that I had never met before near the waterhole in the Red Desert of Wyoming last week. They moved together to a ridge to get a better look at me, and then came closer. First, the red and white pinto mare with her new golden pinto foal and her bay pinto yearling. My breath caught at the sight of them.

Then, their stallion protectively brings up the rear, and he is magnificent, glowing burnished gold in the light.
