No Foal Left Behind in Stewart Creek by Carol J. Walker
I had an amazing encounter with a family of wild horses in Stewart Creek in Wyoming in June. I walked out to an area where there were several families of wild horses. One extremely colorful family of horses ran by me, looking at me as they went to my delight. The dark roan stallion took a good look at me as they ran by.
As I was walking back to my car, I noticed the family peeking out over a hill at me. I was not sure why until a heard a little whinny – they had left the foal behind!
But there was a rescue party on the way – the whole family came running back to get the foal.
He was happily reunited with his dappled gray mother, and then the whole family turned and ran back up the hill. I was laughing as they went streaming by.
This was not the end of the story, however. The next afternoon I drove out to the same area, and the family which I had spotted quite a distance from me, headed straight toward me as soon as I got out of my car.
They were showing me that they had the foal, and let me look at him and them. This was an amazing sight, and I felt so grateful to have this connection with this beautiful wild family.
