“Benson Strikes Out”
Benson is an expressive and extremely colorful wild stallion living in the Sand Wash Herd Area of Colorado, along with his family of five colorful mares. This summer in August I spent hours each day at the main waterhole for the southern part of the Herd Area waiting for the wild horse families to come and drink. Normally wild horses drink and then leave, but in August the horses were staying after they drank and congregating together. This provided a wonderful opportunity for me to observe their behavior and photograph them interacting with each other. In this image, Benson is striking out at another stallion that has gotten too close to his family, and the message Benson is communicating is clearly “back off, don’t mess with me!”
I converted this image to black and white because Benson is a black and white pinto, and his markings show up beautifully against the background when the color is removed. I like to use black and white to increase the drama and highlight the lines of an image.

“The Grey Stallion Runs”
This gorgeous Andalusian stallion is running in an arena in southern France with a blank back wall that serves as a wonderful neutral backdrop for his youthful exuberance. When this stallion shakes his head and his long sumptuous mane flies up, his power, spirit and heart are clearly evident.
In this close up image, the beautiful reddish color of his coat begs to be emphasized, so I left this image in color.
