Fearless Wild Mare

Carol WalkerFeatured Artwork

This is a wild pinto mare named True Heart. She is the lead mare in her large family and a devoted mother in the Red Desert Complex of Wyoming. I do not often encounter her, so I was thrilled to find her family in the late afternoon on a high spot taking a nap. True Heart stood over her sleeping foal and her two older colts stood next to her, rubbing her, touching her as wild horses do. When her foal woke up, she got up and led the family down the hill, and walked straight toward me. I call this piece “Fearless.”

This image looks best in color, which brings out the detail of her blue eyes and vivid splashes of red.
